Top 10 Food Storage Starters

Top 10 Food Storage Starters

With these basics you can make just about anything. Bread, pancakes, tortillas, egg noodles, muffins, casseroles, baby foods, soups, etc…

Precursor: WATER!!! Lots and lots of water!
1. Wheat
2. Beans
3. Rice
4. Grains/Oats
5. Oil
6. Baking Powder/Baking Soda/Gelatin/Corn Starch
7. Honey/Sugar/Salt/Spices
8. Powdered Milk/Powdered (or canned) Butter
9. Canned Food: Soup/Fruit/Veggies/Meats
10. Powdered Eggs

1. Wheat
Obviously for making flour and baking but also as puffed wheat (wheat berries) for breakfast.

2. Beans
Protein… Period! Kidney beans, Navy beans, black beans, all make great filler for soups and other meals. Beans are cheap and easy to cook, so stock LOTS of beans. Stored properly, beans will keep for 10-20 years.
Pro Tip: Soak your dried beans in water overnight. They are better in a lot of ways.

3. Rice (yes, I know it’s a grain)
White rice, brown rice, long grain, medium grain, instant… Lots if choices but here are the basics. Brown rice is more nutritious but white rice stores longer (up to 30 years). Studies have shown that there is little to no nutritional difference between instant rice and regular. Instant rice usually costs more but in an disaster the fuel savings (shorter cook time) may be with the expense.

4. Grains/Oats
Quinoa, millet, barley… All great grains for your larder. Did I mention a grain mill would be useful. Stone not metal, hand not electric (unless you have a bullet proof power plan)… Ya know, just in case. Most grains can store between 10 and 30 years if done right.

5. Oil
Olive oil is the most forgiving but vegetable oil and coconut oil are also good choices here. Find something you usually use, stock up, and keep it rotating. Olive oil and coconut oil store for 2-5 years, or so, depending on storage and type. Some can store for almost 10 years.

6. Baking Powder/Baking Soda/Gelatin/Corn Starch
These will allow you to turn those basics into ACTUAL FOOD! You’ll be makin’ bread, baby foods, cookies, pancakes!!! All those things that will make life a little less drab. Except the pancakes. Those make life awesome.

7. Honey/Sugar/Salt/Spices
Listen, we’ve got some great staples on this list but without these… You’re not going to be looking forward to dinner. These will make all those meals much more enjoyable. Especially the wheat berries. Most spices will store for YEARS if UNopened. Sugar, if kept cool and dry will last nearly indefinitely. Honey, pure honey, lasts for millennia.

8. Powdered Milk/Powdered (or canned) Butter
There are a lot of different brands of powdered milk and they all taste different. You need to try them yourself. I can’t tell you what you’ll like. Canned butter is much better than powdered but powdered is still useful. Thrive brand milk is pretty good. Maybe start there. Powdered butter lasts about 5 years. Milk lasts up to 25 years.

9. Canned Food: Soup/Fruit/Veggies/Meats
Buy what you eat and eat what you buy. Just buy a bunch and keep it in your regular rotation. “Use a can, buy two…” Your biggest needs will be protein and citrus unless you have other means. Peanut butter and jam are highly recommended. Check can dates for recommendations. Many are not entirely accurate but generally, most can be doubled.

10. Powdered Eggs
You will appreciate this advice. Maybe not right now but eventually… Get Honeywell or OvaEasy eggs. The Thrive and Provident Pantry brand eggs are pretty good too. Bad eggs are REALLY bad. Let me save you and your taste buds some agony. Most last about 3 years while the OvaEasy last up to 7 years.

Now, get out that grocery list and get planning!
